Authorities are currently investigating the tragic killing of Paul Waterman, a security guard employed by Sheriff Security Service. The incident occurred at around 3:00 p.m. today at People Supermarket on Lot ‘F’ New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
According to reports, three identifiable males, two armed with handguns, entered the supermarket while it was open for business. Waterman, armed with a .32 Taurus pistol and ten rounds of ammunition, attempted to intervene. However, he was held at gunpoint by the suspects, who proceeded to rob the store owners, Ping Xian Lin and Li Yan Ohen, of cash, phone cards, a cellphone, and a DVR.
A struggle ensued between Waterman and one of the suspects, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to the security guard. The perpetrators fled the scene, running north towards Best Village. Waterman was rushed to West Demerara Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police, led by Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Siwnarine and Regional Detective Officer Assistant Superintendent Jermaine Grant, responded to the incident. They recovered a spent shell from the scene and continue to investigate the case.
