A search is ongoing for 45-year-old Vickram Hardowar, a sailor of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, who fell overboard after his feet became entangled in a seine (fishing net) while fishing at Waini Mouth, North West District in Region One on Monday.
Hardowar was part of a crew of six men, including the boat’s captain. Police in a statement noted that at about 04:30h on Monday, Hardowar was tossing the fishing seine in the ocean some 65 miles offshore when his feet got entangled and he fell overboard.
His crew told police that they tossed two life jackets into his direction and was in the process of turning the boat around when they heard him shouting for help three times before going under.
The men said they searched the area but couldn’t find him.
As a result, they went to the Morawhanna Police Station and reported the matter. The men are presently at the Mabaruma Police Station assisting with the investigations.
