The Guyana Police Force late Monday night confirmed reports of its ranks being involved in a shootout with suspected bandits at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.
Head of the Police Public Relations Department, Mark Ramotar, said the incident occurred earlier on Monday night. However, apart from confirming that there were causalities, neither Ramotar nor Police Commander for ‘C’ Division, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine, could share any additional details.
The Guyana Guardian understands that at least two persons lost their lives and others were injured in the exchange of gunfire. A female is reported to be among the dead and injured. Police have also reportedly recovered guns and ammunition and are hunting for persons who escaped.
The Guyana Guardian was told that the bandits are suspected to be prison escapees. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
